With this issue, the Post Parade will be an every two months
newsletter. Everyone is feeling the economic pinch, and the Post is
trying their best to save money - we have gone to meeting only once each
month, turned down the thermostat, put in energy saving light bulbs, and
reduced our printing and postage costs.
But we haven't reduced our efforts to provide for veterans,
their families and our community. Both the month of May and June are very
busy for Massillon Post 221; on May 12th we will hold nominations for Post
Officers, Poppy Distribution on May 22nd and 23rd, Flags on Veterans' graves at
Rose Hill Cemetery on the 22nd and remove them on Tuesday the 26th, Memorial Day
ceremonies at Western Reserve National Cemetery on the 23rd and the Memorial Day
Parade on Monday the 25th. All of these events require volunteers and we
certainly need your participation.
Then comes June; voting for Legion Officers for the 2009-2010
year takes place on Tuesday June 2nd with the polls open from 9am till 7pm.
On June 6th, we will host a dinner (free to post members and their spouses)
where we name Legionnaire of the Year, hand out other well deserved awards and
install officers for each group in the Legion family; Legion, Auxiliary, and
Sons of the Legion. Boys & Girls State will be the week of June 13th to
the 20th, and the Legion/Auxiliary Department of Ohio will hold their Convention
in Dayton, Ohio on June 26th through the 28th. So as you can see, June is
also intense.
Finally, my year as Post 221 Commander is coming to a close.
I am truly grateful for the experience, and I would like to thank everyone in
the Post 221 Legion family for their support.
1st Vice Commander
Are you a Legion member in the 10% who have not yet paid your dues for
2009?
We are only 66 members short of becoming a 100% paid up membership
Post. Even if you are unable to attend regularly scheduled meetings,
your dues help support the many great programs sponsored by The American
Legion.
But, the most important reason we need you to be a paid up member is for
your help with the many activities going on at your Massillon Post.
Coming up soon:
- Placing flags on our deceased veterans graves at Rose Hill cemetery
May 22, 2009 beginning at 3pm. Removal of those flags will begin
at 3pm on Tuesday May 26th.
- Distributing poppies in honor of the service and sacrifice of all
who served or are serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.
All monies donated for poppies are used only for veterans and their
families. Poppies Days will be held May 22nd and 23rd.
- Election of 2009-2010 Post 221 officers will be Tuesday June 2nd.
Choose the person you want to serve the Post and you; make your vote
count. Polls will be open from 9am until 7pm; you must be a paid
up member with a current membership card to vote.
- An Installation and Awards dinner will be held June 6th beginning at
6:30pm. This dinner is free to members and their spouse.
Come enjoy the evening.

S.A.L. News for March
Hi all! They say that April showers bring May
flowers; well all it did was bring snowballs. Some good things did
happen. We sold all the tickets for the big screen TV, the Cavs made
the playoffs, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin both won a race, and all the
tickets for the Corvette are gone.
Don't forget about the Steak Fry on July 11th. Come
out and enjoy a good time. Our May meeting is the 13th at 7pm and June
will be the 10th at 7pm.
Come and join us on Memorial Day to honor those who gave
so much for us. Until the next time.

RACES Appreciation
The Races are over for this year!! I hope that all
of you that attended had some fun and maybe won some money!
A hardy "THANKS" to you who helped out with any of the
Night at the Races. I anticipate another good turnout at the Races
next year and hope to have ample volunteers.
Thank you,
-Mark Eklund, 2nd Vice Commander
AL Riders
The winner of our "Easter
Duck Lottery and Cash Raffle" was Mike Halco. His name was drawn at
the April Night at the Races. THanks to everyone who supported this
fundraiser, and special thanks to Bill Matthews for the wondeful job he did
announcing our "duck".
We are getting ready for
riding season (May - Oct); during that period our meetings are the first
Sunday of the month at 10:00am in the Post Tavern. Planned rides
follow at 11:00am.
Our 2009 ride calendar is
set; scheduled rides include Chardin Maple Festival, McCarther Wild Turkey
Festival, Veteran Memorial Dedication in Clinton, Massillon Memorial Day
Parade, Ohio Bike Week, State and National Romp in Willard, Vintage AMA Days
in Lexington, Hopedale Fallen Motorcycle Riders Memorial, and the Legacy Run
to the National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. It should be a
full riding season. Why not come and join us?
If you are a veteran with
a bike, please come and check us out or call Sam Postlethwait or Randy
Dunbar with questions. We are veterans who have served and are still
serving!

From Commander Richard Thatcher - Two License Plates from
American Legion Post 202, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Maj. Anthony A. Eaglowski had previously turned in an
American flag that was flown over Zone VI Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, May 23, 2008
in honor of American Legion Post 221, Massillon, Ohio. Now he has made
a beautiful box to display that flag. The flag is on display in the
post tavern. Thanks.
Donor Unknown - One kimono, one paper weight inscribed
Genesee Beer. I have another inscribed Pabst Blue Ribbon, plus a wood
umbrella.
From Alice Stanko: One model airplane from Gerry
Stanko's collection. It is on display in the tavern for now.
Later it will be hung with other airplanes in the museum.
Did you know?
Memorial Day, a day solemnly set apart in the United
States to honor the memory of its dead, by decorating soldiers graves with
flowers and by appropriate memorial exercises. The first Memorial Day
was in 1869 when General John A. Logan, as Commander in Chief of the newly
organized Grand Army of the Republic, designated May 30th as a day to honor
unknown soldiers who had died. That date is still retained in the
north, but in the south, where the custom is also maintained, an earlier
date, usually April 26th, is observed. Today graves of the
Spanish-American war and World War victims receive like honors at home and
in France.
In 2009, Memorial Day will be observed on May 25th.
Come down to your Legion post and help keep Post 221 alive and active.

MAY is the month for Poppies and Flags.
You receive this newsletter because you are a member of
the American Legion Family; a Legionnaire, Son of a Legionnaire, or
Auxiliary member. And that means you are a patriot. So, I'm
writing to ask for your help (if you are able and available) with Poppies
and Flags.
On Friday, May 22nd members of Massillon American Legion
Post #221 will be offering Poppies to the public from 10am till 4pm at the
following locations: Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Giant Eagle. Usually,
we man these locations with teams of (2) people for (2) hour shifts; 10 to
12, 12 to 2, and 2 to 4. Sign up sheets are posted on the bulletin
board or you can call (330) 833-4545.
Poppy distribution will continue on Saturday, May 23rd at
the following locations: Meldrum's Restaurant, K-Mart and Giant Eagle.
Shifts are Meldrum's are 7:30 to 9 and 9am to 11. K-Mart and Giant
Eagle shifts are 10 to 12, 12 to 2 and 2 to 4. Again, sign up sheets
are posted or you can call (330) 833-4545.
Thank you in advance for your willingness to support this
worthwhile project.
Now, about Flags; our Post is responsible for placing
small American flags on the graves of veterans buried at Rose Hill Cemetery
in time for Memorial Day. We are also responsible for removing those
flags after the holiday. The flags make a beautiful and moving sight
when the job is complete; it will make your heart swell with pride to know
you participated in this event. Placement of the flags will begin at
3:00pm on Friday May 22nd and should be complete no later than 6:00pm.
Removal of the flags will begin at 3:00pm on Tuesday, May 26th and should be
completed no later than 4:30pm.
Again, thank you for being a volunteer.
AUXILIARY NEWS
I would like to thank the Auxiliary for the opportunity to
serve as the Unit President. The experience has been an honor and a
privilege. I'm very proud of all the hard work and generosity of our
unit.
I hope you show your support to the incoming President.
She will need all of our help.
Thank you. Respectfully,
-Gail Miller, Unit President
