In case you have not noticed, the Post Parade only arrives
at your home every other month. So put the Post Parade away for safe
keeping so you an keep up with the activities going on at your Post over a
two month period; especially the months of May and June. These two
months are very busy and important to you and the Post.
Due to a change in Ohio law the Post can now have more than 4
Nights at the Races. Starting Saturday May 8, 2010 we will have a race and
then again in September and each month thereafter through the end of 2010.
This activity is now being coordinated by a committee instead of being the
responsibility of only the 2nd Vice Commander. I think this is a great
move. To run the race there is a lot of responsibility for just one
person.
Thanks to everyone who attended the Legion's 91st Birthday
dinner on March 20 and thanks to State Auxiliary President Martha Lee Thatcher
for being our speaker for the evening, very much appreciated.
In case you are wondering about who won the Raggedy Ann &
Andy dolls the winning ticket was sold to Dorothy Cox, a volunteer at St. Joseph
soup kitchen on Mondays. Also thanks to my wife Kathryn Matthews for
making the dolls and donating the money from the sale of the raffle tickets to
Post 221 Auxiliary.
MESSAGE FROM AUXILIARY PRESIDENT, UNIT 221
It's Poppy Time again! Members of the Massillon Post 221 family are
busy getting ready to distribute the bright red flower at area businesses.
Stop by the post to sign up for a shift and help with this worthy project.
Our Miss Poppy and Master Poppy will also be on hand to help with the Poppy
events. Distribution days will be May 28 and 29. Look for us at
Walmart, Meldrum's, and Giant Eagle.
The 10th District will be the hostess for the May Birthday Party held at
the Brecksville VAMC. We would love to have you join us and celebrate
Memorial Day with our hospitalized veterans. This will be an event of
Wednesday May 26th, leaving the Post at 9:00am.
Flags will be placed at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens on Friday, May 29th
between 9:00 AM and Noon. This is always a special way to say thank
you to our veterans that have gone on before us. We will also need
help with the pickup of flags on Tuesday, June 1.
Don't forget the Massillon Memorial Day parade on May 31. The
parade starts at City Hall and will conclude with appropriate ceremonies at
Massillon Cemetery.
June brings District Convention, being held on June 2 at East Liverpool (Glenmoor)
Unit #736. The annual Awards Dinner for our post family will be held
on Saturday, June 5th beginning at 6:30pm. Then it will be time for
Department Convention in Toledo, June 24 through 27. Department
President Martha Lee Thatcher will preside over the convention and lead us
in a very busy and fun-filled weekend.
Please remember our veterans this Memorial Day. I know for many it
is a day off from work or a day to have picnics with the family. It is
also a day to say thank you to so many who died and made our county free so
that we could have picnics with our families. Enjoy the start of
summer and stay safe!
For God and Country,
-Janice Stevenson, President, Unit #221
S.A.L. NEWS FOR MAY/JUNE 2010
Hi all! Well, this is my last newsletter. I'll
be stepping down this year after 2 years as Commander. We won't know
who will be taking over until the May 12 meeting. There are good
people coming up through the chairs to take over. It's up to them to
pick who they want to run the squadron. The S.A.L. Detachment
Convention in Perrysburg is the weekend of May 14, 15, and 16. We will
give you a full report on the happening at the June meeting. Keep a
lookout in future newsletters for upcoming events. We will be having a
steak fry in late summer.
I would like to thank my officers for all they did to
make my two years go smooth and thank the American Legion Post 221, Ladies
Auxiliary, and the Legion Riders for their help.
As Always, Support our Troops.
-Bob Lunsford, Commander, Squadron 221

AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS
Riding season is here! We should have our 2010 ride schedule on our
website soon. Please visit
http://riders.americanlegion221.org for the 2010 Ride Schedule and more
information about the Riders.
The Riders are planning for a busy summer. We will be placing flags
at Rosehill Cemetery for Memorial Day. We are also going to help
dedicate a Legion Riders memorial stone at the Clinton Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Park. We are continuing our fundraising efforts for the
Legacy Fund projects. We will never forget the children of our fallen
heroes. Thanks to your generosity we are surpassing our goals!
You are all terrific!
All interested riders are welcome to our meetings. They are the
first Sunday of the month at 10:00am (during the summer) followed by a group
ride. The only change would be the June meeting will be held June 6,
2010 at 8:00am to be followed by a ride to the Sandusky Bike Week event.
The July meeting will be pushed back to July 11th due to the 4th of July
weekend the previous week.
If you have any questions about membership or ride participation, please
call Sam Postlethwait at 330-830-9689 or Randy Dunbar at 330-832-9459.

John Tsocheff Memorial Museum and Library May-June 2010
Olden Ed Lynch brought in to the museum a
50-page book of pictures, titled 40/8 Flags for First Graders.
Individual flags and flag education materials were given to 881 students and
59 teachers at a cost of $989.97. Thanks Voiture 10 for a great job.
Douglas J. Lab reclaimed the two guns he
had loaned to the museum; model US 1917 Remington 41664 and Jap Ariska model
42-499730. The gun rack looks bare now; I hope we will get them back
again some day. Thanks Doug.
