Commander's Notes

Our Post had a luncheon August 8th for the Marine Corps Band which had marched in the HOF parade earlier that morning in Canton.  The Post served barbecue pork sandwiches, macaroni salad, chips and drinks which the band members really enjoyed.  John Tsocheff also gave the Marines a tour of the Post's Museum before they had lunch.  Following the luncheon they went to the Massillon Rec center for some fun and that evening they were t o play at the McKinley monument in Canton.

Did you notice the 30 American flags that were in our front yard on July 4th?  We plan on putting 20 additional flags out on the front yard our next holiday bringing the total to 50; one for each state of the union.

The picnic on the porch this year was a huge success.  There were lots of great comments concerning the picnic.  We believe that having the picnic before the HOF weekend helped with attendance.  There were a lot of members who attended.  The food was fantastic with a great variety for us all to select from.

At the August 11 meeting, we had the American Legion baseball team in attendance.  The meeting was tepmorarily suspended so could have dinner with the players, coaches, and parents.  Jody Stevenson, our Legion baseball chairman and his wife, Jan recognized the players with certificates and introduced all the coaches.  After the dinner our regular meeting continued.

The American Legion National Convention is in Kentucky this year; August 21 thru 27.  Because the location is not that far away from Massillon there will be a number of our post members attending and we will have a complete report when they all return after the Convention ends.

As you can see we have lots of things going on and we really wish to see more in attendance at our regular meeting.  We meet at the Post the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  If you do not have transportation please give the Post a call and we will make sure you get to the meeting and we will return you to your residence afterwards.

MESSAGE FROM AUXILIARY PRESIDENT, UNIT 221

You missed it!  Talk about a wonderful weekend!  Department of Ohio Convention was a busy and exciting one this year.  Unit #221 received a Certificate of Merit for participating in the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary.  I am so proud of these ladies!  The best part of the weekend was on Sunday morning.  Martha Lee Thatcher was installed Department President during the annual Installation of Officers.  The Colors were presented by our Post #221 Color Guard.  They did an awesome job.  Martha Lee was escorted into the room by her husband, C. Richard Thatcher.  While Martha Lee's daughter Karen held the family bible, Martha Lee took the Oath of Office, vowing to do her best to guide and direct the Department of Ohio.  I was honored to be asked to sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" after the Oath.  This was one of Martha Lee's mother's favorite songs.  It was an emotional moment, and I hope that MOM would have been pleased.  I was then installed as District President for the 10th District.  After Installation, Martha Lee gave an exciting and motivational speech, hleping us to prepare for next year's work.  Like I said, you missed it!  We had such a great time in Dayton, Ohio.

The ladies of this unit work very hard to promote programs like Americanism, Children and Youth, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, and Community Service.  They also work hard to support the American Legion programs as well.  I am so proud to be a member of this Unit.

The next time that you see Martha Lee, or any of the members of Unit #221, please tell them thank you.  They deserve it!

Also, the ladies would like to thank everyone that helped to make the Bake Sale at the SAL Steak Fry successful.  We will use the profits to continue our work in the above programs.

See you at the Post!
For God and Country,
-Janice Stevenson, President, Unit #221

S.A.L. NEWS FOR SEPT/OCTOBER

Hi all,

I don't have a lot to say except to thank everyone who attended the steak fry.  As we did the last time, all steaks were sold.  I hope everyone had a good time and got enough to eat.  Also, thanks to the ladies Auxiliary for providing the goodies.

By the time you read this the National Convention will be over.  I will give you an update in the next newsletter.  Don't forget, we have a trip to Rising Sun coming up in October.  If you have not sent in your 2010 dues, please do so today.

Welcome new member Mike McGraw.

John Tsocheff Memorial Museum and Library - Sept./Oct. 2009

Editors Note:  As of the writing of this article, Historian John Tsocheff is under the weather.  We hope that John will make a strong recovery and be able to continue doing the outstanding job that he has done for American Legion Post 221 for many years.  I'm sure John would enjoy a few cards from his friends and fellow Legionnaires.  Contact the tavern for his mailing address.  We will keep you informed on his recovery.  Here are some thoughts I found on his desk.

DID YOU KNOW?

In all America's quiet towns and teeming cities, people move where they wish, discuss what they will, spend as they choose, and care for the ones they love.  Just going about the business of daily living, these people are using freedoms as simple and familiar as breathing.  People in lands which have lost these simple freedoms could tell us how precious they are.  It seems like we Americans have always had them.  They existed, first only as ideals in the minds of courageous men.  Many of them came to the United States from countries where their ideals were not as good as they should be.

-After 34 years, you're still our Historian John.

RICHARD M. LONGWORTH SR. AMERICAN LEGION GOLF CLASSIC

This year's outing was played on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, July 18th.  It was a little on the cooler side for some, but a wonderful sunny day, perfect for golf.  We had a few good scores, and a lot of other scores.  That's what makes this a fun outing just to go out and whack the ball around.  Dave Fitch fired off a very nice 34 to win low gross.  Rick Norris won low net with an adjusted score of 32.  Good golfing guys.  As usual things went very smoothly thanks to all the great help we get.  Thanks to Alice, Cheryl, and Dan for the wonderful dinner we had on the porch.  Thanks to Mike & Bob for helping defray cost by selling tips.  Thanks to Louie & Bob for gathering all the nice gifts we had.  Thank you to all the generous sponsors who gave graciously during these tough economic times.  Anyone reading this, not just the golfers, please stop by and support these find establishments.  Thanks again to everyone.

Annual Boys & Girls State Dinner

Please join us on Tuesday, September 15th at 6:30 p.m. for the annual Buckeye Boys and Girls State recognition dinner.  This is your chance to see and hear from the outstanding students who were Post 221's delegates for 2009.  This is also our opportunity to personally thank the sponsors whose generosity enabled us to send 24 boys and 20 girls to Bowling Green State University and Ashland University this year.  As always, there is no cost for the meal, but we ask that you call the tavern to let us know you will be attending.

Good Job Girls!

Thank you for the great response to the dues notices.  That's the way we like it!

We now have 115 paid renewals, new members, and transfers.  That's 56% of quota.  We still need the other 44% so don't stop now, keep it coming.

The unit thanks you for your participation.
