NOW THAT'S A GOOD IDEA!

Yes, something different; yet a good idea.  How so?  Well it's a changing world, we're an evolving society, and we must adapt or sink as an American Legion Post, Post 221.
It was noticed and pointed out during the Veterans' Day weekend, that we have those among us that are in wheelchairs, use walkers, canes, or just can't move as fast as we used to.  What a revelation!  We had a pretty good turn out, better than in the recent past, at the Early Bird Dinner, in the ballroom where we have handicap access.  It was refreshing to see so many attend such a nice catered meal and program.  Thanks to all you Early Birds for paying your dues by Veterans' Day.  We not have nearly 600 paid this year, over 80% of our goal.  Please keep recruiting, we are still offering a TEN DOLLAR BREAK for new members!
We're learning that we have to alter our thinking to accomodate our "seasoned Veterans" so future dinners and events will be geared to their needs more than in the past.  We plan to have dinners in the ballroom to facilitate their needs such as avoiding a flight of stairs.
Simply stated, some can't attend the Veterans' Day activities when it requires moving up and down a flight of stairs.  We have accepted that it's time to change so that all who want "their day" can have it amongst their peers.
If you have other suggestions - LET'S HAVE THEM; maybe we'll think "Now that's a good idea!"
I hope to see you next 11-11 at 11:00am.

-Rich Patti, Commander

2ND VICE COMMANDER

We have sent 78 care packages to servicemen and women overseas as of this month and there is more to be sent.  Hopefully we will hit 100-plus by the years' end.
Men's socks are an item that the servicemen like to receive; so if you would like to send them a pair or two put them in the care package box in the blue room and we will include them in the next boxes we send.

Wishing You All a very Happy Holiday and the Best of Health throughout the New Year

SOON IT WILL BE 2008

There are still 37 outstanding Auxiliary renewals.  If you think your non-participation for not renewing is the answer, WRONG!  Renewing every year is participation.  Without members (new or renewal), we would not be a unit and be able to help the veterans and their families, or the community for that matter.
Please send in your dues very soon.
Thank you.  Happy Holidays to you and yours.

-1st Vice Dixie Witter

S.A.L. News

The year is coming to a close, believe it or not.  Where does the time go?
If you have not sent in your dues for 2008, you need to do so today.  Your membership will expire on December 31.  Paying your dues benefits the American Legion family and your community.  Even if you don't come to the meetings or take advantage of what the American Legion has to offer, you are still helping others by renewing your membership and by encouraging others to join the Sons of the American Legion.  We are very close to making our quota.
Your squadron will be ringing bells for the Salvation Army on Saturday, December 22nd at K-Mart.  We need volunteers for two hour shifts beginning at 10am.  Please call the tavern at 330-833-4545 or stop ina nd sign up.
Christmas is the time of year for giving and your squadron will be helping several families who are in need.  If you know of a family that could use our help, please call or come to our meeting on Wednesday December 12th at 7pm
Welcome new members Dennis Randolph and Floyd Wimer.

Happy Holidays,
-Bob Emmert, 10th District Commander

AUXILIARY PRESIDENT...

As the holiday season begins; with all of the hustle & bustle, so does the "Joy of Giving" season.  Now is an opportunity to express your generosity by supporting the various Legion raffles & fund-raisers; also by offering a few extra hours of your valuable time.  Upcoming ~ we will need your help.
Angel Tree - 12 Angel Tags will be placed on the Tavern's Christmas tree; each tag lists the child's name, age & wishes.  Deadline ~ Please have your presents with the tag & your Wall of Warmth items at the post by Dec. 4th; we must have all gifts delivered to the Salvation Army by Dec. 6.
Wall of Warmth ~ donate a hat, scarf, or a pair of gloves or mittens and establish your name on the "Wall of Warmth" located in the Tavern.  All of the donated items collected will be given to the Salvation Army; to be distributed to needy families.
Dec. 4 ~ wrapping children's gifts at our Dec. Aux. meeting - 6pm (Please bring tape & scissors)
Dec. 6 ~ Salvation Army Bell Ringing ~ we would appreciate your help bell ringing at Massillon's Fisher Foods from 2 - 6.
    Dec. 8 ~ Children's Christmas Party 2 - 4pm.
    Santa's Auction - Dec. 1, 2007 at 7pm

Because we had such a fantastic time last year; a night full of fun & laughter, people just can't wait to do it again.  Back by popular demand ~ Santa's Auction will be held in the Legion's Tavern.  Donations are now being accepted.  Now's a great chance to donate those unused X-Mas gifts you received & didn't know what to do with besides hide in the back of your closet.  We will be accepting a variety of wrapped gifts to make it more interesting; such as, nice gifts, gag gifts, gift certificates, recycled gifts, and even money ~ it's your choice and generosity.  I would greatly appreciate it if all donations would be at the post (Donation Box located in the "blue room") by Nov. 28

~Gail Miller, Auxiliary President

John Tsocheff Memorial Museum and Library - December, 2007

From Rose Swisher - Post 221 American Legion cap belonging to Carl Lantzer, Past Commander.  Things have been slow at the museum in the month of November; not much happening.  No one has brought anything for the museum.  The weather has been good, warm for November, and you members have not been up in your attic to find all that stuff that you intended to bring in to be put on display in the museum.
P.S. You haven't been to our Legion meetings, either.  Come on down and see how you can help us in our many endeavors.

MAGNA CARTA 1215

All the liberties we enjoy today had their beginnings with the Magna Carta.  Before it was signed, Kings had the power of life or death over their subjects.  In 1215, a group of English Knights banded together and drew up this Magna Carta, or Great Charter at Runnymede, a meadow on the Thames river, they forced their despotic King, John, to sign it.  Among other rights, the Charter provided that the King could not levy any tax against the Knights without their own consent.  It also granted that no man could be imprisoned except by "The lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land".  The rights were to extend to all people of the Kingdom.  This great document of freedom inspired the men who later drew up our own Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.
