COMMANDERS COMMENTS

Hello everyone,

We have made repairs to our building and some areas have had updated equipment and we are planning on making other updates in the future.
My fellow Legion members, we need your help! As our members depart to post everlasting, we need to replace them with new members to help our post and community. Our membership is on the decline. Our activities at the post need your help; therefore as potential new members see us doing things and activities, they in turn will want to participate. Now that I have your attention and you now want to help, please call the post and we will get back with you or give me a call and I will assist you.
The Honor guard always needs help; call the post and leave a message and we will call you.
The house committee and club company have been doing a great job in keeping the post running as difficulties arise. Thank you!
We had a great time giving teachers at local elementary schools a word of thanks for all they do during Valentine’s week; Barrett Scott, Howard Marotto, Rich Mortland, Pat Patterson, and Randy Dunbar, stepped up; if you want to know more give them a call, thank you.
We are teaming up with the Salvation Army Massillon on March 23rd for an Easter egg hunt at 1pm. Please call the post on how many kids you are bringing or call or email me . The Salvation Army number is (330) 833-6473; located at 315 6th street NE, Massillon, Ohio 44646.

Family game nights are coming back, the events will be posted and the time will be 6pm at the post. Come down and let your kids play and you can relax, play cards or other table games, or just socializes; hope to see you here.
The chili cook off is coming up March 9th at noon. If you think you can make a mean chili,” BRING IT ON!” We will have fundraiser with it as well.
Corn hole is coming back as we are playing at the post on first and third Thursdays of the month. The Department of Ohio American Legion is coming to Massillon for corn hole tournament on April 20th, starting at noon. $15.00 person, $30.00 per team, we hope to see our members there for food and fun…
Hello members; “Sending you good thoughts—and hoping you believe in yourself just as much as I believe in you”.
My gunnery sergeant and I were inspecting a Marine training exercise when we spotted a second lieutenant ambling about. “Where is your foxhole, lieutenant?” I asked. He snapped off a salute and responded, “I don’t know, sir!” Turning to the sergeant, he asked,
“Gunnery, where is my foxhole?”“You’re standing in it, sir,” said the sergeant. “All you have to do is remove the dirt.”( Ret. Lt. Col. Joseph Como,Greenwood, South Carolina)
“If this didn’t make you smile, let me know, and I will send you my senior yearbook picture instead.

~~Larry Stotsberry, Commander

COLOR AND HONOR GUARD

In 2023 the honor guard traveled 5,108 miles, 873 man hours, and honors for 80 veterans. The color guard has completed dozens of events in our local area, from all of the Massillon pre-football games, the Memorial Day parade, and Christmas arrival of Santa to name just a few. In January this year 5 honors, 664 miles traveled, and 65 man hours.
Every one of these events requires time to keep our weapons in good condition and we say thanks to Richard Thatcher for keeping our weapons in first class condition. We fire hundreds of rounds of ammunition every year and keeping weapons in top condition is so important.

Greetings everyone, I hope the holidays were good for everyone. We are having a Chili Cook-off on March 9, 2024. The judging will take place at 12 noon; the details are posted in the tavern. We are at 92% for membership so let’s get to 100% this year. I hope everyone has a nice Easter and hope to see you at the Chili Cook-off.

CHAPLAIN’S REPORT

Greetings, spring is almost here. Spring flowers will be blooming soon and planting time will be coming also. So, get up, do some stretching and light lifting now as to prevent injuries later. Get prepared for the annual chores.
At this date we are praying for several Legion members and their family members due to cancers, back surgeries, heart attacks and several other ailments. Please follow doctors’ orders for a better outcome. Remember in times of pain and suffering take it to the Lord in prayer. Prayer is a powerful balm for what ails.
In closing let us not forget our fallen brothers and sisters. Remember our service members who are in faraway places defending the Country from the dangers and evils of the World. Also say a prayer for all POWs/MIAs who are still missing from all wars and conflicts. God Bless America!!

~~ Howard Marotto

DID YOU KNOW?

The VA has benefits that Vets with disabilities may not know that they’ve earned. Depending on the nature and severity of a veteran’s service connected conditions, they could qualify for assistance in purchasing a house that accommodates their disability. In addition, veterans that struggle with a disability that prevents or impairs their ability to drive can also apply with the VA through the Automobile Allowance and Adaptive Equipment Grants program.
Also, there is a clothing allowance available to veterans that require the use of prosthetics or orthopedic equipment as well as those who may have skin conditions that require medications that are damaging to clothing.
Educational and employment benefits are also available that offer career counseling and other educational opportunities. In addition, Vets can get temporary disability rating increases for those with disabilities who are expecting to improve, but temporarily are out of work as they undergo surgery or hospitalization. Even if the veteran won’t have a long-term disability rating, they can apply to get a temporary increase in their rating while navigating their medical situation.
