COMMANDERS COMMENTS

Hello everyone,

As we begin to prepare for the warmer weather, spring time events are in the final planning stages, and we will get the info out ASAP.
When you or anyone you know is ready to join the Honor Guard and Color Guard, please let us know as we have had some movement in our ranks. As members of our American Legion, I challenge you to participate with our Honor Guard; for only a couple hours it will have an everlasting effect with the families of our members who have moved on to post everlasting.
“If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” —Steve Jobs
I would like to give a thank you shout out to Mark Weldon, Jerry Yochum, and Bob Emmert for their work on post administration, post operational maintenance, post and tavern events.
We are doing teachers appreciation week May 6th to the 10th. As the schools do follow ups with me I will relay the information and have time and dates posted.
If anyone has an idea for family game nights please let us know.
Corn-hole is starting up again as we meet on 1st and 3rd Thursdays in the evening. I have also contacted our local schools about starting high school corn-hole, maybe at the post.
I hope to see you on Memorial Day, either for on the float or at the event downtown.
I had a great time visiting the scouts for their 105th birthday event; we were happy to help the scouts go to camp this year.
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” —Steve Jobs
It was our first day on the rifle range at Lackland Air Force Base. I felt confident as I aimed and squeezed the trigger of my carbine for my first shot. “Good news and bad news,” my instructor said. “The good news: You got a bull’s eye.” Before my head could swell too much, he added, “But it was in somebody else’s target.” —Gene Newman

COLOR AND HONOR GUARD

March and April was busy for the Honor guard. For March and April we have had honors for 6 veterans in Stark County and at Western Reserve, six more honors.
We have traveled over 500 miles and over 150 man hours. Thanks to the Honor and Color guards dedication to continue this work for our veterans. Thanks again to Mr. Thatcher for keeping our weapons in tip top shape month to month. The color guard is starting to wind up for a busy spring and summer season and we thank them for the effort this year. Memorial Day will be the first parade for this year so please if you are available, attend the functions honoring veterans past and present.

CHAPLAIN’S REPORT

Peace be with you! I am dedicating my article to several post members who have recently been promoted to Post Everlasting. We have all suffered the loss of loved ones in our past, however these are our brothers and sisters who served in the service to our great country. Don Taylor, Army – World War II, Beverly Dunbar, Army – Women’s Army Corp and Edward (Ed) McCall, Army. We feel a great loss because we shared a common mission and goals. That is to serve our country in times of War or Conflict around the world. We forged a lasting relationship through our service to the country we loved. We also continue to pray for several Legion members who are sick and need our prayers to strengthen them during these times of illness or suffering. Please keep Ed Lynch, Leonard Badertscher, Jeff Runser, Danny Webber and several others in your thoughts and prayers. In parting from the book of Ecclesiastics: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot.”

~~ Howard Marotto

DID YOU KNOW?

The VA has benefits that Vets with disabilities may not know that they’ve earned. Depending on the nature and severity of a veteran’s service connected conditions, they could qualify for assistance in purchasing a house that accommodates their disability. In addition, veterans that struggle with a disability that prevents or impairs their ability to drive can also apply with the VA through the Automobile Allowance and Adaptive Equipment Grants program.
Also, there is a clothing allowance available to veterans that require the use of prosthetics or orthopedic equipment as well as those who may have skin conditions that require medications that are damaging to clothing.
Educational and employment benefits are also available that offer career counseling and other educational opportunities. In addition, Vets can get temporary disability rating increases for those with disabilities who are expecting to improve, but temporarily are out of work as they undergo surgery or hospitalization. Even if the veteran won’t have a long-term disability rating, they can apply to get a temporary increase in their rating while navigating their medical situation.
